About University

NOVA is a public higher education institution with a mission to serve the society through knowledge and education on a local, regional and global level. NOVA is committed to the construction of the European HE and its courses are organised under the principles of the Bologna Agreement. NOVA includes, besides the Rectorate, 5 Faculties (Science & Technology; Social & Human Sciences; Business & Economics; Medical Sciences; Law), 3 Institutes (Tropical Medicine; Technology & Biochemistry; Statistics & Information Management) and 1 School of Public Health, it offers degrees, BSc , MSc, PhD courses) and postgraduate courses, covering various fields of knowledge. NOVA has 41 R&D Units that were overall rated as best in the country (16 R&D Units with Exceptional and Excellent, and more 14 with Very Good). NOVA has around 20077 students, 1716 academics, and 670 non-academic staff. It has a governance system unique in Portugal, where the Rector (and the Vice-Rectors) meet directly with the Deans of the Schools in order to make all the important strategic decisions for NOVA. NOVA is among the 50 best universities in the world under 50 years old according to QS rankings. NOVA is also in the top 10 of young universities in Europe. Maria Reis

She is a full Professor at NOVA. Her main research interests have been in the area of Environmental/Industrial BioEngineering, with special focus on the development of sustainable bioprocesses for the treatment and valorisation of industrial waste streams for the production of biopolymers and energy. Within this research area, she has published more than 200 papers in scientific journals with peer review and is co-author of 9 National/International Patents, and Coordinated 25 national and international projects (team leader), out of which 14 European Projects
and 6 were co-funded by industrial companies, and participated as team member in 22 research projects.

Mónica Carvalheira

She is a researcher at FCT/NOVA. She has a Ph.D in
Sustainable Chemistry. Her research focuses on wastewater/waste treatment and valorisation through anaerobic digestion process or biopolymers production. She has published 12 papers in international peer review journals and an h-index of 9. She has participated in 7 national and international projects and 1 integrated action with the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA).

Barbara Almeida

Lecturer in Mechanical & Process Engineering,

She holds a PhD in Microbiology from NOVA University of Lisbon (2013) and a degree in Microbiology from Catholic University of Portugal (2007). She began working in R&D Project Management in 2013 gaining an in-depth knowledge of H2020 – EU framework for Research and Innovation structures and
regulations. She is currently the R&D Project Manager at the Biochemical Engineering Group, Faculty of Sciences of the NOVA University of Lisbon, specialized in the management at technical and financial of R&D projects at European level.

Ana Silveira

She is a Professor at Environmental Science and Engineering Department at FCT NOVA. She has a Ph.D. in Sanitary Engineering. Her main research interests are the organic waste valorisation and material valorisation. She has developed a lab scale and pilot unit for composting research. Now she is working in the development of biodegradability tests and the development of new materials. Nowadays she lectures Waste Management and Waste Treatment Systems at Environmental Engineering Master (FCT NOVA).

Graça Martinh

She is an Associate Professor at Environmental Science and Engineering Department at FCT NOVA. She has a PhD in EnvironmentalEngineering (social systems) and an MSc in Sanitary Engineering. Currently she is Student Ombudsperson of NOVA, member of the Advisory Board of PortugueseEnvironment Agency (CAGER) and member of the “Waste Working Group” of the European Environmental Bureau (EEB). Her main research interests have been in the area of sustainable waste management, waste planning and policy instruments, special waste streams management, waste collection and recycling and social psychology applied to waste management.

Ana Pires

She is a researcher at NOVA. She has a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering NOVA. She is also graduated in Integrated Waste Management and Valorization, Ecomaterials field. Her research interests are focused on sustainable waste management, where she applied systems analysis tools like life cycle assessment, carbon footprint, material flow analysis, multi-criteria decision making.
Another interest is the development of studies on consumer behaviour concerning recycling, reuse and waste prevention.

Maria José Correi

She is currently Senior Technician at the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering from Faculty of Sciences and Technology, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (FCT NOVA), collaborates with the Department of Life Sciences of FCT NOVA and is a member of MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre. She holds a Master´s degree in Biotechnology by FCT NOVA, and a degree in Applied Chemistry by FCT NOVA. Her main research interests are solid waste / organic recovery.
