University of Ruhuna (UOR)

About University

It was first established as a university college in 1978. The University of Ruhuna is now a fully-fledged national university with more than 7,500 undergraduate students, 500 postgraduate students, over 500 faculty members and over 17 degree programs generating knowledge and cutting-edge research while educating diverse student population in the nation. The University of Ruhuna has a proud history of about 40 years and the University consists of 10 faculties and 57 departments to offer basic degree programs in their respective disciplines. The faculties are 1.Agriculture, 2. Allied Health Science, 3. Engineering, 4. Fisheries and Marine Sciences &Technology, 5. Graduate Studies, 6. Humanities and Social Sciences, 7. Management and Finance, 8. Medicine, 9.Science, and 10. Technology. Depending on the facilities available, M.A., M.B.A., M.Sc., M.Phil., and Ph.D. Degrees are also offered. In addition, Diploma and Certificate Courses are offered in various disciplines. The University also offers library services, career guidance and sports facilities. The vision of the university is ‘To be the prime intellectual thrust of the nation’ and mission statement is ‘To advance knowledge and skills through teaching, research and services to serve the society’. The values of UoR are 1. Dignity and Respect, 2. Working with Community, 3. Freedom of Scientific Inquiry and Public Interest, 4. Justice and Equity, and 5. Good governance. The members of its academic staff serve as consultants and advisors to a wide spectrum of national bodies and professional associations. In terms of its future prospects, the university is now in the process of developing and upgrading short-term and long-term programmes of teaching and research. Together with the introduction of the semester system and course unit system based on course credits, the recent curricular revisions that address the national needs in the respective disciplines have put the university on a par with many prestigious universities within Sri Lanka and abroad. The effort proves that the University of Ruhuna is deeply committed to developing quality academic programmes in the best interest of the human resource development of Sri Lanka. UoR wants to strengthen its capacity for waste management and to extend its current community service oriented educational offers, also into other educational programs than those of business administration, responding to a national need for improvement .According to the strategic plan of UoR, from 2019 – 2023, it focuses towards entrepreneurial university.

Thusitha Sanjeewa Lalanananda Weerasinghe Gunawardana

He was the Dean of Faculty of Management and Finance since May 2016 until March 2020. He completed his Ph.D. at Nord University, Norway in 2013. He has an MSc in International Business from the University of Agder, Norway in 2007. His research interest focuses on distribution channel and power relationships in collectivistic countries. He has authored a book and published articles. He has presented papers in international conferences.

Gammedde Thandakkarage Wasantha Sriyani

She is a senior lecturer (Grade I) attached to the Department of Management and
Entrepreneurship. She has received the Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka in 1990, and her Master of in Business Administration from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka in 1997. She has finished a summer course of her PhD programme in Agder University of Norway and accomplished the PhD Degree in Entrepreneurship at the University of
Ruhuna in 2012.

Indrani Mawelle Withanawasam

She is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Accounting and Finance, the Faculty of Management and Finance. She obtained her MSc (Management) Degree from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka. She was a recipient of VU International Postgraduate Research Scholarship under which she completed her PhD (Accounting) Degree at Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia. She shares her expertise with the students and the academics in the University context, particularly in the areas of Management Accounting, Computer Applications in Accounting, Research Methodology, and Environmental Management Accounting; playing multiple roles as a Course Coordinator, a Research Supervisor, and an Examiner, apart from being an active member in Curriculum Development and By-law Revision at the Faculty.

Fauzul Mafasiya Fairoz

She is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship. She has received her Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration from the University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka, in 2006 and PhD from the Shizuoka University, Japan in 2010. She worked as the Head of the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship, Faculty of Management and Finance, University of Ruhuna until March 2020. She was the member of the Editorial Board of the Ruhuna Journal of Management and Finance in 2013/2014. Similarly, she was the project leader of the Business Clinic organized by the University of Ruhuna in collaboration with the Southern Provincial Council in 2017. In addition, she has worked with Chamber of Commerce, and Small Enterprise Development Division in MSME development.

Vijitha Gunarathna.

He is a senior lecturer attached to the Department of Accounting and Finance at the Faculty of Management and Finance. He received the BBA (Accounting) degree from the University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka, and MSc in Business Administration degree from the University of Agder in Norway. His research interest is mainly concerned with Capital Structure, Working capital management, Risk and Return, Participatory Budgeting.
